Consistency
The other day I was driving behind a car with a myriad of bumper stickers. Two of them in particular caught my eye. One said, "Keep Abortion Legal!" and the other said "FUR" with a big buster sign around it.
I remarked to Shelly, "How is that position consistent? Kill babies but not animals?" Of course, that isn't the way the person driving in front of me feels about his position. He doesn't think he advocates killing babies; rather, he advocates the mother's individual rights. Certainly he recognizes, as the Supreme Court did in Roe v. Wade, that fetuses (feti?) do have some rights--it's just that the rights of the mother overpower them.
The woman's right involved in an abortion has to do with her own body, yadda yadda, and the fur-wearer's right just involves fashion, which is admittedly less of a concern. But there are still two rights involved on each side of the balancing. So the pregnant woman's right is stronger than the fashionable woman's right. I'll concede that. But isn't the fetus's right proportionally even stronger when compared to the animal's? I'd like to ask my fellow driver if he thinks a baby and a mink are fungible.
