Dogs

Everyone who knows me knows I'm a dog person.  But I have learned something about my dog-person-ness this summer that I hadn't totally understood before.  I am living with some friends who have a very sweet golden retriever named Preston.  He is well-behaved, very cute, and always in the mood for a scratch.  Seriously, folks.  This dog will do anything for a scratch.  Sometimes he lives indoors, and sometimes he lives outdoors.

I have learned why I am not a general dog person, but a dog-who-lives-outside person.  You would think that the reason not to have dogs in the house is because they piddle on the carpet or chew up the furniture or leave hair everywhere.  But those are minor concerns that don't come into play with a nice dog like Preston very much (except the hair).

The real reason to keep your dog outdoors is because when the dog is indoors, he is with you all the time.  You try to pour a bowl of cereal, and his head is in your lap, wanting a scratch.  You try to watch TV, and he's crawling up onto the couch with you, looking for a scratch.  You try to go to the bathroom, and he's using his head to pry the door open, asking for a scratch.  I love dogs in general and Preston in particular, but there are only so many scratches one person can give out in a day!
