Metro Opens Car Doors
They just increased the fares on the DC Metro again, and this time they've gone too far. From where I am living, out clear in the crud past Mt. Vernon, it actually becomes more economical to drive. The one-way rush hour Metro fare is now $2.70 from where I am. But I have to drive for 20 minutes and pay $3.00 for parking, too. That adds up to $8.40 in money, plus the time and frustration of driving, parking, getting on the Metro, transferring, etc. (We'll put to the side the fact that I actually like to ride the Metro because I can read while I do it). Parking in the city is $10. It just might be worth it to me to pay the extra $1.60 and drive in. If I can get one or more people to carpool with me and split the parking cost, then it definitely becomes more manageable.
Subway systems are supposed to encourage people NOT to drive. This one is encouraging me to drive. And it took me almost an hour and a half to drive home tonight.
