Don't They Carrot All?
I've always been a little perplexed by the phenomenon of "baby carrots." You know, the rounded little carrot stubs you buy in a bag. I guess they're just the product of an American consumer who wants everything Ready To Eat, and an untouched carrot is too big and unwieldy to put into a kid's lunchpail. But how much carrot is wasted in the making of these baby carrots? I mean, you probably can't get more than two or three baby carrots from any one individual real carrot. What happens to the excess? Is it shipped to starving orphans in Thailand? Whatever happened to the old tradition of the carrot stick. You know, the one with the sharp corners that you cut yourself with a knife? I miss carrot sticks. But I guess I'm too lazy to buy a real carrot and cut them up myself. Sigh.
