Some Less-Than-Divine Thoughts on General Conference

* My official guesses for the two new Apostles were Bruce C. Hafen and H. David Burton. But I explicitly expressed hope that a non-American would be called. My hopes were realized. I am very glad that Elder Uchtdorf is a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. It is proof that the Church is not just no longer a Utah church, but that it is no longer an American church. Sure, it's not very much of a German church either--a Latino would probably have been more representative. But that will come. I'm very happy.

* Elder David Bednar was a surprise, because I don't know much about what's going on with BYU-Idaho/Ricks ("The Y of I"). But that makes the second Ricks president to be called to the Twelve. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Elder Bateman. I just Googled him and found he's 52 years old. As he was speaking, the thought came to me that it'll be pretty hard for any of the other 14 men above him in seniority to outlive him. Yes, that's right. I'm making a prediction here.

* President Hinckley stressed that husbands and wives should do everything in their power to make sure the other one is comfortable. As we were travelling home, Shelly commented that I'm probably going to use that comment to keep her from getting me out of bed in the morning. Funny, that's exactly what I thought I would do as soon as President Hinckley said it.

* Another temple in the Salt Lake Valley, eh? The natural question is, exactly where will they put it? I think (based on my own personal preferences) that it'll have to be between the Salt Lake Temple and the Jordan River Temple on the North-South axis, and east of the Salt Lake Temple on an East-West axis. That puts it right about in Holladay, where I grew up. I hope they name it the Mount Olympus Temple. That would be so cool. Other potential names: The Sugarhouse Temple, The Foothill Temple, The Sandy Temple, The Murray Temple, The Suicide Rock Temple, The Salt Lake East Temple, The Salt Lake Temple II, The 4500 South Temple.
