What ESPN Doesn't Know
Here's a piece on ESPN.com talking about rivalry week. I'm not sure if the author is trying to rank the rivalries, but for some reason, Utah-BYU comes in at #2 (certainly this can't be a "better rivalry" than Cal-Stanford or Michigan-Ohio State; maybe it's just more important this year than those games because of what's on the line for both teams).
Anyway, it points out that the very first meeting between the University of Utah and the Brigham Young Academy, in 1896, was played on April 6, "[f]or reasons that remain utterly unclear."
Any member of the LDS Church could tell you why the game between the church-sponsored academy in Provo and the church-sponsored university in Salt Lake (as it was in 1896) was played on April 6. The reasoning is obvious; I'm just impressed that someone had the idea to do it.
Who knew Jesus Christ, the LDS Church, and the BYU-Utah rivalry all had so much in common?
