Don't Cry For Me

Today we were babysitting for Shelly's cousin. They have two very cute boys, ages 2 1/2 and about 10 months (I think). And the baby gave me an experience I've never had before.

Shelly was holding him when he saw me walk up, and he stretched out his arms toward me, as if to say, "Ooh! Hold me!" I don't know if any baby has ever specifically asked me to hold them before. But what happened later I am certain has never happened before. After holding him for a while, I went to hand him back over to Shelly for a minute, and he actually started crying. He looked at me, reached for me, and cried. Like a baby. He stopped when I picked him up again. Then he cried again when I handed him back to Shelly. Amazing.

Now, I have certainly made babies cry before. But usually it's because they don't want to be with me anymore. Never in my life, though, has a baby cried because they can't be with me when they want to. It was actually quite flattering. I've found that the love of a baby, from a smile to a cry when you leave them, is a very important form of self-esteem booster.
