Huh? I Can't Hear You!
At the entrance to the Harvard Law School library, there has suddenly appeared a box of free earplugs. You can just reach in and pull out your favorite style--traditional cylindrical, rounded conical, or attached-with-a-cord. Beside the box is a little sign which says, "Need some quiet? Take some earplugs!" There is no indication on the sign what organization is distributing the earplugs.
This is yet another crazy idea. The HLS library is really quite quiet. Every now and then a pair of people start talking a little loudly, or someone forgets to put their cell phone on vibrate. But in general, the only things I hear are the blowing of the always-too-cold air vents and the clicking of the keys of my keyboard.
I wonder if there have been complaints from students about noise in the library. Even if there have been, why is it the law school's responsibility to hand out free earplugs? You'd think this might be some shameless promotion from Lexis or Westlaw, but their ubiquitous logos are conspicuously absent. Maybe someone somehow just ended up with a huge box of three different kinds of earplugs (won it in a contest? Were they playing "The Quiet Game"?), didn't know what to do with it, and then gave it to the school (tax deduction?), who thought the most appropriate place to distribute earplugs would be at the library.
In truth, of course, the most appropriate place would be at the doorways to Civ Pro classes.
