So long, Gary

As a BYU football fan, I feel obligated to say something about Gary Crowton's "resignation" as head coach. To be honest, I think I'm kind of ambivalent about the idea of getting rid of him. It's true that with players going on missions and stuff, the BYU team won't be entirely composed of people Crowton recruited until next year or the year after. And I'm not entirely convinced that the failures of the team in the last three years are completely his fault (one comment I read indicated that for all the credit kicker/punter Matt Payne gets, his missed field goals cost BYU three games this year--hit those and we're 8-3, not 5-6). And BYU did play a very tough schedule this year--three of our opponents are still undefeated. (I wonder if any team in the history of the universe has ever played three teams that finished undefeated (of course, USC still has UCLA and the national championship game, and Utah and Boise State still have bowl games too, but it's likely they'll all keep it up). I checked past final polls (which, of course, include bowl games), and only three times since 1993 have two teams ever finished undefeated, let alone three, and let alone having all had a common opponent.)

I guess my verdict is still out on whether it's a good idea to let Crowton go till they hire his replacement and we see how good he is. The candidates that are being thrown around don't impress me much, unless they're absolutely unavailable (i.e. Andy Reid, Norm Chow). Maybe we'll get a surprise. But at least Utah won't be so good anymore with its coach gone next year.

Comments:
What? No comments on the hiring of Bronco Mendenhall as BYU head coach?

Let Rudy ball begin. Hopefully Bronco will learn quickly that one Rudy equals a movie; more than one Rudy equals an unemployment line.
