Why I Blog

As part of a discussion going on as to why law students blog over at Ambivalent Imbroglio, I emailed the author to put in my two cents. You might as well hear it here first.

I blog for quite a few reasons. Originally, I only told my family and friends about it, and used it more like a public journal, so people can keep track of me. I have noticed that my friends seem to know more about what's going on in my life than I know about theirs, because they read my blog. That's kind of cool. I also want to develop writing skills. Sometimes when I blog, I think of new ideas I wouldn't have had if I weren't writing about them (the theory I presented in my recent review of "The Incredibles" is a prime example). Other times, I just want to record trivial, passing ideas that I have that I would otherwise forget about. Sometimes I see or experience something that elicits a reaction in my head, and there's no one else to say my reaction to but my blog. So it serves a cathartic function in that way. It's also an ego booster (for whatever reason) to look at how my site meter is slowly growing. Plus, it's fun! All those reasons and probably more.

I'm not too much of a fan of the term "blawg" [meaning a law-related blog], especially as applied to my blog. I suppose for others, whose blogs are very law-centric, it would be more appropriate. My blog, though, is the chronicle of my life. Sometimes I talk about the law, simply because the life of a law student deals with the law from time to time. But I also talk about my religion, movies or shows I watch, random thoughts that pop into my head, things that happen to me as I am walking down the street, etc. I am not a blawger; I am a blogger.

How do you pronounce the word "blawg" differently from "blog" anyway?
