Monday College Football Post

I think the things I have to say about the college bowl season can be said even before the two remaining bowl games (Sugar Bowl tonight and Orange Bowl tomorrow).

I lament the loss of Boise State to Louisville for a couple of reasons. First, they no longer have the nation's longest winning streak (though 35-2 in their last 37 games ain't bad). Second, Louisville is moving to the Big East next season and the fact that it is a very good team won't help the ginormous tunnel vision the BCS has, thinking that the Big East is still a "power conference." Third, I have totally hopped on the Boise Bandwagon. It's great to see a team that didn't even move to Div. I-A till 8 years ago competing at this level. It proves that even teams without tradition can be good. (Thank you to Nebraska for proving this season that teams with tradition can be bad.) I console myself in the Liberty Bowl results by my claim that if there were 45 to 60 seconds more in the game (or if the QB had known a thing or two about time management), Boise would have won.

What's up with Cal losing? Bet they feel stupid for whining about their BCS snub.

And most importantly, is anyone surprised by the way Utah manhandled Pitt? 35-7, and it wasn't even that close.

Why does the BCS even bother with their complicated "poll" formula if they're going to just include any yahoo who wins a conference that used to have some good teams in it? The only reason Pitt is ranked at all is that the pollsters realized they were going to win the Big East and therefore they'd better be ranked. If we can't have a playoff (which I realize we can't), can we at least have the BEST EIGHT TEAMS playing in the four big bowls, regardless of conference affiliation? I mean, wouldn't you rather have seen #1 USC-#2 Oklahoma, #3 Auburn-#4 Texas, #5 Cal-#6 Utah, and #7 Georgia-#8 Virginia Tech (with #9 Boise State and #10 Louisville rounding out the top ten in the Liberty Bowl!) than this mullarkey we got this year?

I love college football.
