Holy Hairdos
There are some new ads out for Dove hair care products featuring cartoon women Wilma Flintstone, Marge Simpson, Jane Jetson, and Velma Dinkley (Who knew she had a last name? Does Shaggy have one?). I couldn't find the ads online, but basically they show how these women have stiff, bad hairdos before they use Dove products, and free-flowing, beautiful tresses afterwards. If you ask me, Jane doesn't look that much different, and Velma's 1970s fashion sense will always overpower any improvements she might make to her hair.
Anyway, very soon after first being exposed to these ads, I saw a large portrait of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and I thought that she would make another good candidate for a Dove spokeswoman, if they ever decide to update the campaign with life-tenured, non-animated women. I mean, Justice Ginsburg's hairdo makes Marge Simpson look downright whimsical. I tried to imagine what Ruthie would look like if she just let her hair down, literally. Her face probably wouldn't be so tight. Justice O'Connor and all the old men on the Court would look five to ten years older just by standing next to her. But I guess she wouldn't be quite as intimidating as she glares down at the attorneys from her Supreme bench. Why do we need to be unattractive in order to be authoritative?
