Arnold on Abortion

The lead article in the online version of Newsweek right now is a discussion of how Condi Rice couldn't get the GOP nomination for President in 2008 unless she becomes more pro-life. In making the argument that abortion is a litmus test for both parties, the author points out that Condi's fellow Republicans, Rudy Giuliani and Arnold Schwarzenegger, would likewise be denied the nomination because of their pro-choice leanings.

Surely the author knows that Arnold is constitutionally prohibited from becoming President! He was born in Austria, which makes him ineligible for the office under Article II of the Constitution. There have been a couple of well-publicized attempts to amend the Constitution and allow a foreign-born President, but so far that hasn't happened. Arnold's position on abortion, therefore, is irrelevant to his chances for the Presidency.

It frustrates me when a journalist will ignore a basic, well-known truth just to be able to throw around a snazzy name in an article. It's obvious that, at least in this instance, Newsweek's purpose is to sell magazines, not provide correct information.
