How to Cheer?
As a Jazz fan, I'm in a predicament. The Jazz are really lousy this year. They've currently got the 5th worst record in the NBA, and it ain't improving. Last year, they overachieved. This year, with a couple of new pieces, they are showing their inexperience. And I don't know what to do.
I've never been in the situation before where my team is not going to go to the playoffs no matter what. Ever since I've been old enough to be aware of the Jazz, they've been in playoff contention. Last year, though they didn't make it, they almost did. In fact, last year, the Jazz had the unenviable honor of being the best lottery team in the league. That's the worst place to be: no shot at a championship, and not-so-great draft picks (at least compared to other teams with no shot at winning a championship).
So do I cheer for my team to keep losing, to increase their chances of pulling off the #1 pick? Or do I cheer for them to win because they're my team and I want them to win? Is it OK to give up on this season as a lost cause and start looking to the future? Or would a little more winning be educational and motivational for them? I seem to remember that Seattle had a nice little run at the end of a really bad season, and it has carried them into a fabulous season this year. Do the Jazz need to build up that momentum? Oh, the travails of a sports fan.
