Beddie-Bye
When I was about to get married, one of the tasks I was assigned with carrying out was the purchase of a new bed for me and Shelly. I did this alone, because Shelly was living in Virginia and I was living in Massachusetts at the time, and we would be making our new home in Cambridge. I considered the importance of the quality of the mattress I was buying: you spend a third of your life in bed. I decided that I would fork over some extra money and get a really, really nice one. And I have never regretted the decision to do so. Our bed is one of the most comfy places I have ever been.
One of the most uncomfy beds I have ever met is that of a former roommate of mine, who slept on a thin, hard futon on a wooden frame. You'd be just as well off lying on the floor as on this bed. When I asked my roommate why he had such a terrible, uncomfortable bed, he replied that he wants to be used to sleeping in an uncomfortable bed, so that when he travels, he'll always sleep well because nothing could be more uncomfortable than what he's used to.
Well, after this last week of sleeping on couches and spare mattresses while househunting in Virginia, I can kind of see his point. Neither Shelly nor I slept really well a single night of our expedition. I found myself longing for a night in our glorious bed. When we finally did return, I fell asleep immediately (a rare feat for me) and slept like a rock.
I still don't regret getting the most comfortable bed I could find. But my bad sleep experience did make me at least a little more grateful for having done so.

Comments:
Actually, another big reason my current bed is so comfy is the sheets we use. The brand is Pure Beech, available at Bed Bath & Beyond (and who knows where else), and no one who has ever touched them has ever said anything other than "Ohhhhh... That's so sooooft...." If you're having trouble sleeping but can't afford a new bed, try some new sheets.
