Livin in the Leigh

So there's a cutesy side to the subdivision where we bought our new house, and where we're now living. The neighborhood is called Amberleigh, and in a wonderful stroke of genius, someone thought it would be a great idea if all the names of the streets in the area ended with -leigh. The main road is Crestleigh Way. You've got Brookleigh, Greenleigh, Meadowleigh, Coachleigh, Briarleigh, Parkleigh, Overleigh, and our street, Rockleigh. The silliest street name of all is Langleigh, which of course sounds exactly like Langley, the area of Virginia nearby where the CIA is headquartered.

I don't mind the idea that all the street names in the subdivision have a connection, but I must admit that I liked it better when I was living on Harvard Street or Washington Street (my two addresses in Massachusetts): people know how to spell those words.

Just as Shelly and I are consciously trying to choose a name for our forthcoming baby that she won't need to spell every time she meets someone, it's good to have street names that you don't need to spell. Already, I've told one too many people, "Rockleigh Way. That's R-O-C-K-L-E-I-G-H. No, rock like a stone, then leigh. L-E-I-G-H. Yeah. And then Way."

Comments:
This is totally creepy and stalkerish, but I know exactly where you live. It's by the Springfield Mall, right? I used to take the Metro out to the Franconia/Springfield stop and take the VRE out to visit family in Burke. Small world.
