EQM Co.
One of the reasons I know the LDS Church is true is the EQM Co.: The Elders Quorum Moving Company.
The other day when we needed some help moving couches and a piano into our house, all I had to do was ask around at church. We got the help we needed and a very heavy job got done quickly and efficiently.
So tonight I thought I would return the favor. Word came out that there was a new family moving into the neighborhood, and they needed some help unloading their moving truck. I volunteered.
I arrived at the house, knocked on the door, and the guy who answered smiled at me and, as though we had been friends for a long time, said, "Hey, how are ya?" We'd never laid eyes on each other before, but because we were both Mormons, and because I'd stepped up to help him out, we were good buddies.
As we groaned over bookcases, couches, a washer and dryer, and a fridge, we got to know each other a little better. Then, when the work was done and I was about to leave, I left him and his wife with my phone number in case he needed anything else. On my way out, I bothered to ask what their last name was.
I have long been struck by the way the church provides instantaneous friendship, support, and service. And it's not only moving help. I've found apartments, received employment assistance, and been invited to social events by people who didn't know me from Adam, but who liked me and trusted me because we were of the same religion. I wonder if this works the same way with other religions. But this I do know: If you're Mormon, you're family.

If you are in the process of selecting a moving company, here are some points to consider:
§ Established Company
Check older copies of the Qwest Dex yellow pages. This will give you a good indication as to whom the established companies are.
§ Customer Service
Are you talking to an experienced representative or a girl Friday? This can make the difference between making sure the arrangements for your move are accurate. This is simple to determine, are you being asked intelligent relevant questions about your items and conditions or are you simply being quoted an hourly rate?
§ Insurance
What is the amount of the company’s general liability policy? Will the company send you documented proof? Do you have to pay extra for insurance coverage?
§ Repair/Replacement Policy
Will the company guarantee that they will repair or replace any items that their movers damage free of charge to you or will they pay you based upon $0.60 per pound?
§ Professional Full-Time Movers
Does the company use only full-time professional movers or do they utilize labor pool personnel and day laborers?
§ Written Confirmation
Will you receive a written confirmation that includes pricing via e-mail, fax or mail before the movers show up to move you?
§ Arrival Time
Will you receive a two (2) hour window of arrival for the movers or a simple: “we’ll be there sometime in the morning.”
