A Weak Football Post

I wanted to write something about college football this week. After all, it's fun to spar with that Anonymous SEC fan who keeps commenting whenever I do.

But I have almost nothing to say this week. I'm deeply saddened by the fact that the only undefeated teams outside of the BCS conferences are good ol' Toledo and UTEP. The BCS will not be busted this year, like it was last year. September isn't even over yet, and the only hope we BCS haters can hold onto is that four or five BCS teams go undefeated or that all of them sustain at least two losses--creating chaos that would demand a resolution by playoff either way.

I was going to write about the Big East factor. How Louisville wasn't given the time of day last year when their only loss was a narrow one at Miami, but this year since they've joined the Big East, they're ranked number 8 or 9. But then they got blown away by Southern Florida, and dropped in the rankings accordingly. I could argue that if it had been, say, Florida who had lost that game, they wouldn't have dropped so far. But I suppose that's as much due to the program's tradition as to the BCS.

But it's not like the Big East still deserves to think it's an elite conference. What with all the defections, Louisville was the only thing they had going for them. And then Louisville pulls a stunt like that.

Anonymous, do your best. I don't have much material with which to bash the BCS this week.

Comments:
Do you think USC is the best college football team in the nation?

I don't know. I know they're very, very good. Honestly, I haven't watched enough of the teams ranked in the top 5 or so (you know--the other possible candidates for best football team in the nation) to have an educated opinion. Texas has the best win, against Ohio State. Florida sure looks impressive. But USC does seem to have a lot of mojo rollin'.

I guess we'll never know, though. I mean, was USC the best football team in the nation last year? Who knows? All we know is that they were better than Oklahoma, another very good team. But Auburn might have been better. Utah might have been better. Louisville might have been better. Texas might have been better. We'll never know, because USC didn't beat these teams, or teams that beat these teams.

We'll never know who is the best football team in the nation until we have a playoff.

(See? A whole thought about college football, and I didn't even mention the BCS once. Explicitly, at least.)
