Thank Goodness They're Free at the Doctor's Office
One of the things you have to deal with when you're expecting a baby is a whole bunch of pregnancy and parenting magazines. At first I was a little excited about them--at least they'd be a little more fun than some of the dull, week-by-week pregnancy books.
Exciting indeed. Allow me to share with you some of the exciting tidbits from the October 2005 issue of Pregnancy Magazine.
* The cover boasts, "Get your dream nursery on ANY budget." Turn to the article, and you find a two-page photo spread of products that the manufacturers wrote in to get the magazine to promote. Among them: a three-drawer chest for $129, a glowing star for $6.99, a teeny two-shelf bookcase for $159, a butterfly pillow for $20, a changing table for $1,309, and a wrought-iron crib for $1,299. Sure, you can have a nursery on any budget, but if your budget is like that of most parents, you're just going to have to go without the functional items and furnish your nursery with glowing stars and butterfly pillows.
* A sidebar feature entitled, "What's in a name?" (an inventive name!): "The big news second trimester? Finding out the sex of your baby. IF you haven't already thought of a nema, here is a lsit of the most popular names recorded by the U.S. Social Security Administration from 2004." They then list the top four names for each gender. The top four. Thanks. I can just see a pregnant mom just stuck on a name, not knowing where to turn, and right there in the magazine, she sees the top four names. "Oh!" she cries. "Emily! It's settled then!"
* And best of all, like most magazines, there are little tear-out cards you can use to sign up for a subscription. But get this: The subscription is for 14 monthly issues. For Pregnancy magazine. Oh please.
