Best and Worst Movies (the cop-out)

I've been putting off this post for longer than I intended to, and not entirely because I've been too busy to post. Really, I've been thinking about what I thought were the best and worst movies I watched during 2005, and I can't really come up with a definitive list. Nothing really jumps out at me on either end except "The Prince and Me," which is undoubtedly one of the worst movies I've ever languished all the way through. The only good thing I can say about it is that it seems to have put a hush on the career of Julia Stiles the stone-faced harpy (only two movies in 2005, neither of which I've ever heard of). Other than that, I don't know what to say were my favorite and least favorite movies.

There were movies that I liked--don't get me wrong. I would recommend "An Ideal Husband," "Big Fish," "Mean Girls," "K-PAX," the original "Cheaper By the Dozen" from 1950, "Spider-Man 2," "Kicking and Screaming," "Napoleon Dynamite," and "The Best Two Years" to anyone. I watched one of the Muppet movies, which are obviously always in good taste, and Episode III was the best of the new Star Wars trilogy by far. But I don't know that I'd put any movie on this year's docket on my list of all-time favorite movies. Maybe "Napoleon Dynamite," but I didn't see it for the first time this year, so it feels like it doesn't count.

If I really had to pick one, I'd probably go with "Big Fish." Great story (the book is on my recommended list too, you'll see--and it comes with even better fish stories than the movie) and great Tim Burton-esque visuals.

Now that I don't have the Cambridge Public Library at my disposal, I might not see as many movies in 2006 as I did in 2005. That's probably OK. the chances of me stumbling upon a truly excellent film don't seem to be all that good.
