Fair-Article Fan

If you look off on the left sidebar of this here blog, you'll see that one of the ways I describe myself to the world is "Jazz Fan (music and NBA)." I think that says a lot about me, but I'm coming to realize I'm no average Jazz fan. At least I don't think I am.

I'm talking about basketball here.

I follow the Jazz very closely. I read the Deseret "Morning" News just about every day in an effort to keep up with them. While I don't memorize the schedule, during the season I usually have a generally correct idea of what happened during the last few games, and who they're playing next and when. I follow ESPN.com's Power Rankings weekly, and have traditionally been able to name most of the players on the team and how the Jazz came to acquire them.

But I don't watch the Jazz. I only read about them.

Every day after a game, I pull up desnews.com and find out if they won. If I'm particularly interested in the game, I'll read the ESPN.com article too. But I can't actually watch very many games because I live in Washington, DC and the TV here just doesn't pick up too many Jazz games.

But last Thursday, they played the Wizards, and the game was on local TV. So I made a plan to watch the game, and I did. I honestly don't know when was the last time I watched a Jazz game. It was kinda fun.

But it was weird. Back in the day, I could not only name all the players, I could recognize them. Nowadays, I read a lot about people like Milt Palacio and Devin Brown, but I couldn't pick them out of a lineup. So when some strange-faced Jazz player went to the free throw line, I would ask, "Who is that?" Then I would learn.

All right, you say. You don't really care about all this. My point is that I am an article fan of the Jazz now. Not a game fan. I enjoyed watching the game (though they lost), but I don't know that I would watch them all that much even if I did have regular access to them. I much prefer just showing up at my computer the next morning and investing 5 minutes in finding out what the score was, how close Andrei Kirilenko got to another rare five-by-five, and so on. That's the kind of Jazz fan I am now.

Of course, if they make the playoffs, it might be a whole different story. Living here in the land of George Mason University, it's giving everyone hope.
