Anonymous Lawyer

This morning, before coming into the office, I stopped at the Border's bookstore a block away because I knew there was something there I wanted to see. I didn't make a purchase, but I will, and you should too. Convincing you to do so is the purpose of this post.

One of my friends from law school, Jeremy Blachman, is coming out with his first novel today. It's titled "Anonymous Lawyer," and it's based on a satirical blog he's been doing since the middle of law school. It purports to be the rantings of a deranged hiring partner at a high-pressure law firm in Los Angeles,* as he posts on his anonymous blog. On Christmas Day 2004, Jeremy was outed by the New York Times as the author of the blog, which some people actually thought was nonfiction. That led to a book deal, which led to a book, which led me to Border's this morning.

Of course, the cheapest way to purchase the book is through Amazon, so that's probably what I'm going to do (I was hoping Border's would have it discounted, but no such luck). And if you go to Jeremy's own site and click through to Amazon from there, he gets an extra $1 out of the deal. So do that.

If you've ever been to law school, worked at a law firm, told a lawyer joke, worked at a job you didn't like, written a blog, or known anyone who has done any of the above, I think you'll like this book. I can attest from personal experience working on creative projects with Jeremy, and reading just about everything else he's written since we met that he is a very funny and keen-witted guy. The book doesn't look too long or difficult, either. And if you contact Jeremy through his site, he'll even autograph your book for you. He's that kind of guy.

Of course, when I actually read the book, I'll post a review of it, which I promise will not be tainted by my relationship with the author. Promise.

PS--Also check out Jeremy's related satirical website, Anonymous Law Firm LLP.

* Jeremy has never been west of Texas, to my knowledge. Why he didn't set it in New York City, where he was born and raised and currently lives, is one of the great intriguing mysteries of the book.

Comments:
He landed a book deal! I'm very impressed. I started reading it off and on back when you linked to it from your blog, and I thought it was pretty entertaining. His fictional partner posted more regularly than some of my blogger friends that actaully exist. If I've read the blog, is there anything more for me to read in the book?

Absolutely! Jeremy has repeatedly claimed that only about 10% of the material in the book comes from the blog, and most of that is reworked somehow. The book also includes emails and has a plot stringing it together.

To be honest, I'm more of an occasional than a faithful reader of the Anonymous Lawyer blog. But I'm really excited to read the book because it will have what I think the blog most lacks: a sense of unity and purpose.
