Life-Altering Herbs

I was thinking about this the other day when I made some French bread. It's very rare that you have life-altering experiences. It's even rarer that it's some waiter in a restaurant who alters your life.

Some time ago, back when we were living in Cambridge, Shelly and I went out to eat at Bertucci's in Harvard Square. Bertucci's, of course, is a nice little national chain of Italian restaurants, and, of course, the best part about them is their rolls. I like to put butter on them (which melts) and then sprinkle Parmesan cheese liberally.

Well, this particular day, when we commented to the waiter that we love the rolls so much, he said, wait'll you try this. He went into the back and got out some olive oil and rosemary. This is not standard procedure at Bertucci's. But he recommended that we try rosemary with our rolls. And you know what--I loved it!

Now I'm a big rosemary fan. I put it in my olive oil all the time when I have French bread. I dare say it's one of my favorite herbs/spices, right up there with garlic (the two go together). I am a changed man, thanks to that waiter's suggestion. Go rosemary!
