If I Don't Make It...

This afternoon I went out for a recruiting lunch. It's recruiting season here at my firm (and every other law firm in the land), which means we have a fresh crop of second-year law students coming through for interviews, and one of the important parts of the interview process is a trip to a fancy-pants restaurant, so they can get a taste of what life will be like when they're summer associates.

Well, today we went to one of my favorites, Olives, on L St. here in DC. The experience, as always, was great. But as we were about to order, when the waiter asked if we had any questions, I found myself literally inquiring as to whether I would die if I ate a certain item on the menu.

Really.

See, of all the appetizers and salads, the warm spinach salad looked the tastiest.

And boy, was it indeed tasty.

All three of us at the table took our lives into our own hands and ate spinach, despite the recent contamination scare that reportedly has claimed a few lives. Me, I never really took the spinach scare seriously. I mean, every single leaf of spinach in the entire United States is deadly? Give me a break. I take my chances with fatal car accidents; I can handle a green leafy vegetable. And besides, the waiter assured us that the spinach was not deadly.

It had a bunch of shaved Parmesan cheese and crispy onion and real pieces of bacon, and mmm mmm was it good. I wouldn't say it was literally "to die for,"* but it was worth the risk. I almost felt like I was eating pufferfish or something.

So if I wake up dead tomorrow morning, consider this my last warning: the food at Olives is killer.

* The desserts quite possibly are. Can't get enough of their falling chocolate cake, or (my choice today) the vanilla bean souffle, where the waiter stuffs a scoop of ice cream into your souffle, then pours warm vanilla sauce all over it. Mmmmmm....

'reportedly' claimed a few lives?

I mean hey, if the waiter assured you...
