Step By Step

I miss out on the funny little things Ellie does every day. I make sure to ask Shelly about them, but hearing about it isn't the same as being there. Most of all, though, it's the milestones that I'm worried about missing.

That's why this Thanksgiving weekend I was extra grateful I was there for Ellie's first step. It was Saturday November 25, 2006, and we were staying for the week in a beach house in the Outer Banks (Nags Head, NC) with some friends. Ellie had been working on standing by herself without holding onto anything, and Shelly and I decided to make her practice again.

I stood her up on her feet and she wobbled, but remained upright for a few seconds as she had done before. I was behind her, Shelly was in front of her. Then, an amazing thing happened. She picked up her right foot and placed it back on the ground a very short distance in front of her. Two seconds later, her bum was on the floor, but Shelly and I were cheering wildly for her. That was the only step we got out of her that weekend.

But yesterday while I was at work, Shelly hooked Ellie up with this little walker toy we have (essentially a handebar with wheels) and got her walking behind it while holding on (nothing new). Shelly took away the walker, and Ellie took a couple more steps to grab it again. Shelly called me to tell me Ellie was officially walking.

So of course I made Ellie replicate it as soon as she got up this morning. And she did. She never did more than two or three steps at a time, and a lot of them were over the course of a falling motion before she grabbed the walker again, but my baby is walking. And I think she might be figuring out that this is a new way to get around. You go, baby!
