A Reprieve

What with work being very busy lately, I searched all around for a few days that I could possibly take off, and I found three days this past week I got a green light on. Last Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I just hung out with my girls and forgot about work for a while. What a reprieve it was.

The highlight was a camping trip we took on Wednesday. Shelly and I haven't been camping for years, and Ellie had never been camping before. We went to the Shenandoah "mountains" about an hour and a half west of here. It's amazing how you can drive just a relatively short distance and feel so far away. Once we were in the woods, everything about my life in DC just faded away and I was able to really relax and feel comfortable.

Instead of drafting motions, I lit a fire with two matches or less (the Boy Scout maximum). Instead of reviewing documents, I sat with Ellie at the side of the Shenandoah River and pointed out to her the little fish we could see in the shallow water. Instead of going to meetings, I talked with Shelly about nothing in particular as we made S'mores on the marshmallow stick I whittled.

Life is pretty simple when you're in the woods. I think I need to get back there more often.
