BYU and BCS
In years past, I've made many college-football-related posts in this space, bemoaning the BCS and rooting for my team, the BYU Cougars. Today I find myself in an interesting situation, having remained silent on the topic all season long: depending on the results of several games tomorrow, BYU might actually get into the BCS.
Oh, sure, it's a long, long, long shot, but it's possible. All that needs to happen is the following:
1. BYU beats San Diego State
2. Arizona beats Arizona State
3. UCLA beats USC
4. Washington beats Hawaii
5. Oregon State beats Oregon
6. LSU beats Tennessee
Is that too much to ask? Actually, we probably only would need EITHER Oregon OR Tennessee to lose, so that makes it that much easier. See, if Arizona and UCLA win, then there's a four-way tie for the Pac-10 championship and UCLA wins the tiebreaker. And there's a rule that any non-BCS-conference team ranked #16 or higher in the BCS standings that is also ahead of a BCS-conference champion gets an automatic bid. Hence, BYU, who is currently #19, needs a couple more teams above them (i.e. Oregon and/or Tennessee) to lose in order to move up the requisite three spots. And of course, there's another (stupid) rule that only one non-BCS-conference team can go to a BCS game per year, and since Hawaii is ranked higher than BYU, they will go unless they lose (which would also help out BYU's rise from #19 to #16).*
Of course, that's not going to happen, and frankly, I'm not sure I want it to, as much as I would love to see my Cougars in a BCS game. Because what it would mean is a date in the Sugar Bowl with LSU. While a rematch with Gary Crowton would be fun, the Cougars would not win that game, and I would be embarrassed. So while I will root for those six teams tomorrow, I won't be upset if one of them loses.
If the dream scenario doesn't play out, it's off to the Las Vegas Bowl again, but BYU's opponent could be anyone from Oregon State (decent choice) to Purdue (no opinion) to UCLA (please don't make us play them three times in 370 days) to Boise State (the best matchup because they're ranked, but I want Boise to win their bowl too and would be forced to cheer against them if they match up with the Cougars).
I also hope Missouri and West Virginia, currently #1 and #2 in the BCS, lose tomorrow, too, because then, in the words of one sportswriter, "All hell will break loose." There will be a glut of one- and two-loss teams (particularly the latter) thinking they deserve to be in the championship game, especially Georgia, who couldn't even win their division of their conference. The more confusion there is about the title game, and the more the Appalachian States and the Stanfords of the world beat the Michigans and the USCs of the world**, the more likely a playoff would become.
All I want is for my boys to have a chance to do something special. Right now, the only way they could is to get to that BCS game this year, destroy LSU, stay ranked in the preseason, and go undefeated all next year. So as long as I'm hoping for those six games to turn out the right way, I can add those other points to my wish list too, right?
In the words of Susie Derkins, as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony.
* Of course, if only BYU and Washington win out of that group, a not-so-unlikely scenario, BYU would move up to #18 in the BCS and thereby be ELIGIBLE for an at-large bid, but no one would be required to take them. If, say, the Fiesta Bowl snatches up a two-loss BYU team that it isn't obligated to take, we'd all better start repenting, because The End is coming soon.
** Wasn't this a great season for upsets? 12 Top-Five teams losing to unranked teams? Woo-hoo!
