Daylight Savings Trick

I love Daylight Savings Time. When Congress decided that we needed to extend it by two months last year, I didn't complain one bit. I like when it's lighter later. I like coming home from work with the birds still chirping. I don't mind if it's dark in the morning - my mood is too.

But I don't like the Spring Forward part of the whole scheme very much. You lose an hour of sleep or activity and although you get it back in the fall, you still feel robbed. I like being on Daylight Savings, but I don't like getting onto it.

So this year we tried something new. Last week, the week before Daylight Savings was to start, I worked like a madman. I was up very late many nights (particularly late in the week) because I had two big projects at work that were both coming to crunch-time. So by Sunday night, I was very, very tired.

We put the kids to bed (adopting a new sleeping scheme, as Shelly meticulously documented in her space) and both of us flopped on our bed in our newly reclaimed room. It wasn't quite 9:00 yet, but it didn't feel like 9:00.

On the springtime Daylight Savings day, 9:00 usually feels like 8:00. For us, it felt like 11 or midnight. We went straight to bed. We reclaimed that missing hour of sleep and a few others by simply going to bed extra early due to exhaustion.

And you know what? It worked!
